PURPOSE:To simplify a constitution and shorten a program retrieval time by retrieving a position of the medium in which a program number desired to research in a VTR and designating a running direction of the medium. CONSTITUTION:A head 8 reproducing a researching signal when a recording medium 19 is rapidly traversed or rewound, a detecting means 51 for reading a program number from this reproduced signal and a researching mode setting means 54 setting a program number to be desired to research and starting a program researching retrieval are provided. When a signal indicating the program researching retrieving is inputted, the medium 19 is rewound or rapidly traversed and the respective signals indicating the program numbers from the means 51, 54 are compared. According to the comparison result, the medium 19 is rapidly traversed or rewound to retrieve the position of the medium in which the program number desired to research is recorded, and a signal indicating the running direction of the medium 19 is supplied to the means 51.
