The invention relates to a machine for the wrapping of elongate articles, with a ring through which the article passes in continuous advance and which carries the wrapping-material stock roll which, during the rotation of the ring, revolves round the article, the stock roll at the same time unwinding, and with a gripper device for retaining the start of the wrapping material, and proposes, for an advantageous wrapping at the start of the wrapping material, that the gripper device (G) clamping the start (A) of the wrapping material over its surface be designed as a two-part slide having an upper beam (29) and a lower beam (20), and that the upper beam (29) possess a clamping-jaw carrier (32) which is controlled in the direction of the lower beam (20) or away from this and which carries clamping jaws (36) spring-loaded in the clamping direction, in the phase of the start of wrapping the slide moving back out of the wrapping plane, opposite to the advancing movement (Y) of the article (7), thereby taking up the start (A) of the wrapping material clamped by the clamping jaws (36), and, after the completion of a plurality of wrapping layers taking place without any advance, releasing the start (A) of the wrapping material as a result of a backward displacement of the upper beam (29) for the purpose of the subsequent wrapping, taking place with advance, both at the start (A) of the wrapping material and of the article (7). <IMAGE>
