PURPOSE:To obtain readily and industrially the titled compound in high yield and high purity without forming a by-product through the batch process, by reacting H2S with an ester of acrylic acid in the presence of an ester of 3,3'- dithio-dipropionic acid using an insoluble anion exchange resin as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:H2S is reacted with an ester of acrylic acid in the presence of an ester of 3,3'-dithiodipropionic acid using an insoluble amion exchange resin as a catalyst to obtain an ester of 3-mercaptopropionic acid by batch or continuous process. Since the ester of 3,3'-dithiopropionic expressed by the formula S2(CH2CH2COOR)2(R is alkyl) is not consumed as shown in, for example, the reaction formula, the ester can be used repeatedly and the aimed substance is produced selectively in good yield.
