The ultrasonic sector scanner has a cover assembly in which a flexible membrane (64, 66) is provided with ribs (68) which engage grooves (62) in the wall of the housing (58). A heat-shrink tube (70) or other retaining ring is arranged around the flexible membrane (66) in order to press the ribs (68) into the grooves (62). The ultrasonic sector scanner includes a rigid nose piece (60) inside and spaced from the flexible membrane (64) in order to increase the skin contact area when the flexible membrane of the sector scanner is pressed against the skin of a patient being examined.
