PURPOSE:To obtain the titled relatively inexpensive composite material excelling in strength, wear resistance, etc., by using in a proper volume percentage hybrid fiber consisting of alumina fiber and alumina-silica fiber each having a specific composition as fibrous reinforcement and also by using Al etc., as matrix metal. CONSTITUTION:The alumina fiber consisting of, by weight, >=80% Al2O3 and the balance essentially SiO2 is uniformly mixed with the amorphous alumina- silica fiber consisting of 35-65% Al2O3, 65-35% SiO2, and 0-10% other components such as CaO, etc., and containing in an aggregate <=17% nonfibrous grains and <=7% nonfibrous grains with >=150mu grain size to form the hybrid fiber. This hybrid fiber is used as the fibrous reinforcement by >=1% by volume and, as the matrix metal, Al, Mg, Cu, Zn, Pb, Sn, and alloys mainly composed of them, so that the very inexpensive composite material excelling in mechanical properties such as strength, wear resistance, etc., and having superior characteris tic of wear by friction with opposite material can be obtained.
