PURPOSE:To produce automatically an approximating surface through a printed board CAD device by writing graphic data on a printed board pattern to each mesh and detecting successively the meshes set immediately before the mesh to which the data different from the prescribed one is written. CONSTITUTION:The largest retrieving area A is set for production of an approximating surface and then divided into meshes. The pattern graphic data on the printed board designed by a printed board CAD device is converted into the mesh data and written on the corresponding mesh. The data which is not equal to 0 is written on the graphic data and a certain width of the periphery of the graphic data. A retrieving start position B is designated by a cursor and the CAD device starts retrieval in a prescribed direction to detect successively the meshes immediately before the mesh which is not equal to 0. Then the CAD device obtains the mesh data on the most outer circumference C forming an approximating surface and converts it into the graphic data. The inside of the circumference C is painted out.
