Class 53 An accumulator is provided with plates separated by sheets of semi - permeable material such as regenerated cellulose. The whole of the plates and separators are placed under pressure which lies between two limits namely the value under which the life of the accumulator is lessened by falling of the active material from the plates and the value above which the electro-chemical changes are slowed down. The thickness of the separators required to obtain the optimum pressure is obtained from the ratio of the length of the container minus the total thickness of the plates to the total thickness of the dry separators. This ratio should be about 2.3. Curves are given in the Specification showing how this figure is obtained. Fig. 1 shows an apparatus for enabling a curve to be plotted showing how the pressure to which the plates and separators are subjected varies with the ratio referred to above. A pile of dry separators 19 of known thickness is placed on the floor 13 of a receptacle 10 containing a loosely fitting piston, 17 carrying a rod 16 to which is attached a plate 27 carrying a pointer 28 moving over a calibrated scale of pressures 29. A spring 26 abuts against the plate 27 and a plate 25 adjustable in height by a screw 24. The screw 24 is adjusted so that the spring is under zero compression and electrolyte is then poured into the upper compartment of the receptacle 10. The liquid flows round the piston into the space below the piston and saturates the separators which swell and force the piston upwards.
