PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a production raw material for pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, etc., in high efficiency, at a low cost, economically on an industrial scale, by desulfurizing the whole sulfur content of crude isoquinoline to a specific level and hydrogenating with a nickel catalyst under a specific reaction condition. CONSTITUTION:Crude isoquinoline is desulfurized to a total sulfur content of <=10ppm, preferably <=2ppm by the recrystallization and/or washing of crystalline isoquinolinium salt, or by the hydrogenative desulfurization in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst such as Ni, or the desulfurization in the presence of a metal reactive with sulfur such as Raney-Ni, or their arbitrary combination. The desulfurized product is hydrogenated at 200-230 deg.C, preferably 205-225 deg.C under a hydrogen pressure of >=10kg/cm<2>.G, preferably >=20kg/cm<2>.G in the presence of a nickel catalyst to obtain the objective decahydroiosoquinoline. EFFECT:The process can be performed economically on an industrial scale using a nickel catalyst even in the case of using a tar-based isoquinoline as a raw material. |
