PURPOSE:To return an original platen to a specific stop position invariably at the start of copying operation by setting an engaging means at the 3rd position where it engages neither of the 1st and the 2nd clutches when the original platen is at the stop position. CONSTITUTION:This device has the 1st clutch 74 which moves the original platen 14 forth, the 2nd clutch 88 which moves it back, an energizing means 100 displaceable to the 1st position (d) where it engages the 1st clutch 74 to set an operation state and the 2nd position (e) where it engages the 2nd clutch 88 to set the operation state, an energizing means 101 which energizes the engaging means 100 invariably to the 2nd position, and a driving means 107 which positions the energizing means 100 at the 1st position (d) against the energizing force of the energizing means 101 with a forward movement signal. When the original platen 14 is at the stop position, the energizing means 100 is operated at the stop position of the original platen 14 so that the energizing means 100 is set at the 3rd position (f) where it engages neither of the 1st and the 2nd clutches 74 and 88 against the energizing force of the energizing means 101.
