PURPOSE:To recognize an image object used to necessitate utilizing an intermediate color in a high-speed practical computation time by providing a luminance signal extracting circuit in the section. CONSTITUTION:A signal in the preset specified luminance level section is extracted from an image memory 5 storing a picture signal of an object to be recognized with the luminance signal extracting circuit 6 in the section and the dot number with reference to the signal is counted and an area is measured with an area measuring circuit 8. Further, a necessary minimum region for recognizing the object is set as a mask pattern with a mask pattern generating circuit 7. Then, the area in the mask pattern measured with reference to each extracted luminance signal is compared with a preset standard measure ment value and a recognizing process is performed with a control part 9. Accord ingly, the recognition with reference to the object including the intermediate color is made possible and as to the recognizing process by the area measure ment in the mask pattern the data amount can be reduced to the minimum and a part to depend upon software is small and a processing time is reduced remarkably.
