PURPOSE:To improve a vertical resolution characteristic and perform an outline correction of a video signal by a simple constitution by disposing a means for interlace driving an image sensor to carry out a correct interlace driving. CONSTITUTION:An object is projected on a photodetecting section of a solid state image pickup element 2 through a photographing optical system 1, photoelectrically converted and a signal charge corresponding to a quantity of light of the respective points of the object is stored in respective cells of the photodetecting section. In the element 2, the signal charge controlled by a transfer clock from an image pickup element driving circuit 12 is read every odd number field and every even number field as a time series signal and this signal is outputted to a sample and hold circuit 3. In the circuit 3, the time series signal is succeeded every sampling cycle and in the output thereof, a luminance component Y is taken out by an LPF4, by a correcting circuit 5, an interlace correction and an outline correction are executed and a processing is done such as gamma correction or the like in a luminance signal process circuit 6 to supply the signal to an encoder 9.
