PURPOSE:To detect the accurate speed and direction of a moving body with respect to the surface of the ground, by fixing an image pick-up part to the moving body and applying image processing to the obtained image signal. CONSTITUTION:An image pick-up part 1 is provided so as to match the focus thereof with the surface of the ground 6 and the obtained image signal is processed by an image processing part 2 to be displayed on an image display part 3. Now, when a moving body 5 is moved at a certain speed with respect to the surface of the ground 6, the ground surface image 7 of the display part 3 moves to a position 7' after a time DELTAt corresponding to the moving speed and direction of the moving body 5. Herein, marks 8, 9 respectively show forward and rearward vectors and a mark 10 shows the synthesis of both vectors, that is, the displacement vector (moving) direction of the moving body. Because the moving speed and direction theta of the image 3' of the ground surface perfectly correspond to the moving speed and direction of the moving body, the image signal is processed by the processing part 2 to calculate the timewise correlation at every time interval DELTAt and the speed and direction of the moving body with respect to the surface of the ground are calculated and can be displayed on a speed/direction display part 4.
