PURPOSE:To obtain a vertical magnetic recording medium which obviates substantially drop-out controlling the surface shape of a vertical magnetic recording medium. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic layer 12 is formed on a heat resistant film 10, by which the vertical magnetic recording medium 14 is constituted. The cutting line of the height Hs at which the total area of the cut ends by designating the are obtd. when the medium is cut in the part of the deepest valley la in parallel with the medium surface as 100% is set to specify the rugged condition of the medium surface. The height at which the area rate of the cut end of the projections is 1% when the medium surface is cut in parallel with the medium surface is determined as a reference and the projections higher by>=700Angstrom than said height are eliminated by which the vertical magnetic recording medium having excellent durability is obtd.
