PURPOSE:To reduce an error in air-fuel ratio generated by an uneven characteristic between air-fuel ratio sensor products and by a deterioration in an air-fuel ratio sensor, by measuring a response delay itself of the air-fuel ratio sensor and correcting a control quantity for an air-fuel ratio regulating means. CONSTITUTION:A device is equipped with a control means 3 which controls an air-fuel ratio regulating means 1 on the basis of an output from an air-fuel ratio sensor outputting a signal showing air-fuel ratio whether it is rich or lean for the theoretical air-fuel ratio. While the device is equipped with an inversion time measuring means 4 which measures a time TRL, from a point of time the air-fuel ratio regulating means 1 inverts the air-fuel ration from a rich state to a lean state till an air-fuel ratio sensor 2 detects the inversion, and a time TLR from a point of time the air-fuel ratio is inverted from the lean to the rich till the air-fuel ratio sensor 2 detects the inversion. And the device is constituted such that a control quantity for the air-fuel ratio regulating means 1 is corrected by a correcting means 5 so as to obtain the air-fuel ratio approaching the theoretical air-fuel ratio in accordance with a difference TD between the time TRL and TLR.
