PURPOSE:To obtain a phenolic polymer which provides redox response under a wet condition and shows improved electrical conductivity under a dry condition, obtained by subjecting a phenol (derivative) to electrolytic oxidation polymerization in an acetonitrile electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:Phenol or a phenolic derivative (preferably 2,6-dimethylphenol) is dissolved in preferably 0.05-1M acetonitrile, then preferably 0.1-1M supporting electrolyte (e.g., sodium perchlorate, etc.) is added to the solution, which is subjected to electrolytic oxidation polymerization, to give a phenolic polymer which provides redox response under a wet condition and about 10<-3>-10<-4>s.cm<-1> electrical conductivity under a dry condition. EFFECT:Causing neither chain in chemical structure nor reduction in electrical conductivity even if the polymer is allowed to stand for a long time in air.
