An improved banknote stacker 200, which results in a higher level of flexibility and very efficient stacking with a reduction in the number of jams and creased banknotes. In a first embodiment, the improved banknote stacker has a top housing 202 and a bottom housing 208 provided with moulded fingers 204; 210 and slots 206; 212 for joining to a banknote validator 100, a banknote transport apparatus 300 with a self-adjustable pulley arrangement 302, a pre-storage section 400, a banknote pusher 500 which has a sensor arrangement 525; 560; 562 for detecting the starting position of the banknote pusher 500, allowing the latter to be controlled during use by a simple open loop control, and a banknote magazine 600 for storing stacked banknotes, providing easy access to the stacked banknotes. <IMAGE>
