The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 3-mercaptopropionic ester from H2S and acrylic ester in the presence of 3,3'-dithiodipropionic ester, in which an insoluble anion exchanger resin is used as catalyst in a batch-like or continuous procedure and the ester is synthesised in a technologically relevant way, the reaction temperature being approximately 0 to 60 DEG C and the reaction pressure being 0 to 13.5 kg/cm<2> (G) (G: manometric pressure), the yield of 3-mercaptopropionic ester being 91 to 96% based on the acrylic ester and its purity being above 99%, measured by GLC (gas liquid chromatography). In this invention, the 3-mercaptopropionic ester is synthesised in high yield and high purity and is suitable for conditions or uses in industry. The advantages of this invention are that 3-3'-dithiodipropionic ester, which is present during the reaction, is not utilised at all and can be used repeatedly and, since the anion exchanger resin is used as catalyst, it can be removed from the reaction system by a simple filtration.
