An infinitely variable speed gear drive including driving or driven shafts or parts (100, 101, 102, 124) and at least one flexible transmission element acting between said parts and rotating when in operation, said element being arranged in a finite, open loop having a size that is variable in order to, when necessary, make possible a variation of the transmission ratio between said parts. The flexible transmission elements are chains (104, 104') or similar that are arranged cooperate with and be carried by a number of rotatable wheels (105, 105', 122, 122' 123, 123') or glide elements, some wheels (105, 105') being drivingly connected to one of the shafts or parts (100, 101, 102, 124) and provided with cogs or teeth. The tooth- or cog-provided wheels (105, 105') are arranged in such a way that always at least one is in mechanical engagement with a chain. At least some of the wheels (105, 105', 122, 122', 123, 123') or the glide elements are movable inwards and outwards by means of an adjustment mechanism (106) in order to vary the length of the loop and by these means change the transmission ratio between said shafts or parts. |
