APPARATUS AND METHOD OF DECONTAMINATING HYDROCARBONS CONTAINING PCB

Apparatus mounted on a mobile vehicle (10) is utilized to process hydrocarbons having high toxicity due to the presence of PCB. Hydrocarbons containing PCB are blended with metallic sodium at a temperature of about 130C and thereafter the mixture is separated into its components one of which is a hydrocarbon containing less than about 2 ppm of PCB. The water is removed from the hydrocarbons by filter (20) and directed to a reactor (22, 24). The hydrocarbons are brought up to temperature by cycling the hydrocarbon the heat exchanger (30) and the reactor. The metallic sodium is then added by flowing the heated hydrocarbon through chemical ejector (34). The reactant sodium chloride and phenyl polymer are separated from the hydrocarbon by separator (40).
