In this method, a current image of an object is obtained by means of an opto-electronic sensor and compared with a predetermined reference image. The respective signals for a subsequent sorting process are derived from the comparison. To reduce the error rate and thus to increase the quality of correlation, the current binary word is successively compared with reference words from memory chips (9, 10) via a comparator (5, 6), the smaller current word written in place of the corresponding reference word when it drops below the reference word, and the remaining reference words shifted on by one address via a buffer memory (11, 12), the last reference word dropping out due to the current word shifted in. Instead of minimum sorting, this method can be used for carrying out maximum sorting when the reference word is exceeded. <IMAGE>
