A rapid response of a cable-rupture brake for measuring and marking-out instruments, whose carriage, which can be displaced on the vertical instrument column and supports the transverse arm of the instrument, is connected to a counterweight via cable strands and pulleys mounted on the upper end of the vertical column, is achieved by virtue of the fact that prestressing means have the sole task of moving braking members in the form of a lever arrangement or excentric arrangement or clamping/freewheeling arrangement into engagement with a braking surface on the vertical column of the instrument, while after the braking engagement has been brought about the braking forces increase the contact pressure of the relevant braking members by self-locking and bring the carriage of the measuring and marking-out instrument to rest essentially instantaneously.
