The illuminating device (10) intended for illuminating goods on offer on display shelves, shop tables, display counters and the like has a housing (14) which can be mounted on the underside or on the front end edge of a shelf compartment floor (12) and is composed, on the one hand, of an elongated metallic sectional carrier (16) and of a front side wall (18), which is removably arranged on the sectional carrier and made from a plastic which is pellucidly transparent or translucent in the manner of a ground glass screen. The transparent or translucent side wall (18) has holders for slides or displays which can be transilluminated by light emitted from lamps arranged behind the side wall (18) either in the housing (14) or on the underside of the compartment floor (12). <IMAGE>
