The invention relates to a device for the welding together of workpieces, with a drive for upsetting the workpieces heated on their contact faces. In view of the high upsetting force, there is the risk that an offset of the workpieces pressed together will occur during the upsetting operation. In order essentially to avoid this offset, according to the invention there is provided as an upsetting drive a force-generating system 7, 8, 14 which has a force/path characteristic decreasing from an initial value in dependence on the upsetting path covered (Figure 1). <IMAGE>
