The apparatus (1) comprises a wheel (4) which is rotatable in steps on a shaft (10). Pockets (5) are mounted rotatably on the wheel (4). The pockets (5) have a first wall (20) and a second resilient wall (21). In a feed station (6), a slab (2), together with a portion of wrapping material (3), is pushed into the pocket (5). During the displacement of the pocket (5) into a sealing station (7), projecting tabs (15, 16) of the portion (3) are laid flat onto a sealing stay (23) connected to the first wall (20). In the sealing station (7), a sealing seam is formed by a sealing jaw (44). During displacement into an unloading station (9), the pocket (5) is rotated through 180 DEG . This design ensures that the tabs (15, 16) can be relatively wide and nevertheless do not crumple, thus guaranteeing a tight sealing seam. As a result of the rotation through 180 DEG , the slab assumes a favourable position for subsequent folding operations. <IMAGE>
