<p>The speed reducing mechanism is of simple construction and is easily adapted for providing different ratios of speed reduction, particularly a high ratio of speed reduction. The mechanism comprises inner and outer gears (30, 38) in planar engagement and a non-rotatable shifter member (36). In alternate embodiments, either the inner gear (30) or the outer ring gear (38) may be rotatable. In one disclosed embodiment the inner gear (30) is driven by the input shaft (22) under control of the shifter member (36) to engage at this periphery with the ring gear (38) using the ring gear to be driven thereby. The inner gear (30) tracks within the ring gear (38) but is maintained non-rotatable by the shifter member (36). The gear ratio is a function of the number of teeth externally on the inner gear (30) in comparison with the number of internal teeth on the ring gear (38). The closer in number the teeth, the higher the reduction ratio. In another embodiment the speed reducer is in the form of a hand operated winch (120).</p> |
