PURPOSE:To obtain an allylcellulose derivative of a substantially full degree of substitution by using a single solvent and inexpensive chemicals, by dissolving a cellulose derivative in dimethyl sulfoxide and reacting this derivative with an allyl halide in the presence of an alkali. CONSTITUTION:An etherified or esterified cellulose derivative is dissolved in a single solvent of dimethyl sulfoxide. After a powdered alkali in an amount to provide any desired proportion to the free hydroxyl groups of the cellulose derivative (for example, 10mol per mol of the OH groups when it is reacted with all of the free hydroxyl groups) is added, an allyl halide in an amount equivalent to said alkali is added to the solution and reacted. As said alkalis, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, rubidium hydroxide and cesium hydroxide can be used and sodium hydroxide is particularly desirable. As the allyl halide, allyl chloride is desirable.
