PURPOSE:To provide the titled receiver with a capability to discriminate between a half-tone expression and a binary-valued expression by altering the superposed pulse signal for signal-identification during a blanking period of a facsimile signal as corresponding to the picture constituency of a picture of half-tone expression and binary expression in one line. CONSTITUTION:The discriminant signal to discriminate between the half-tone picture and the binary picture is superposed in a period T1. A period P'0 is a pulse to identify if the line is of either brightness signal, color-difference signal, or of control signal, and is the same as conventional. P'1, P'2, and P'3 are waveforms that correspond to the areas P1, P2, and P3 of the half-tone and binary pictures of a facsimile original 1, whose peak value shows whether the picture is half-tone or binary. That is, the highest peak value h1 is a value to identify the half tone, and h2 is for the binary picture. The reproduction of the binary picture is executed by slicing at the value of h2, hence the h2 is so made as able to be used as a slice level.
