<p>C<Sub>3</Sub>-C<Sub>4</Sub> hydroxyalkyl ethylcellulose ethers substantially soluble in toluene, and toluene and heptane mixtures, are prepared by contacting alkali cellulose with C<Sub>3</Sub>-C<Sub>4</Sub> alkylene oxide and ethyl halide under appropriate reaction conditions. Preferably, cellulose is contacted with an initial charge of alkali metal hydroxide and a second charge of alkali metal hydroxide is added after addition of the etherifying agents. Such organo-soluble cellulose ethers are useful in thickening organic solvent systems comprised of toluene.</p> |
