摘要 PURPOSE:To improve display and driving characteristics of the title element by constituting the title element from a liquid crystal cell composed of a ferroelectricity smectic liquid crystal, an impressing means from an alternative electric field capable of orientating the liquid crystal to a stabilized orientation, a matrix electrode means and a means for impressing an electric field having two sort steps. CONSTITUTION:The title element is constituted from the liquid crystal cell interposed between a pair of the substrates 101a and 101b, the ferroelectricity smectic liquid crystal layer 103 orientating to the first or the second stabilized orientation, when the electric field is not impressed to the liquid crystal, and the impressing means for the alternative electric field capable of orientating the first and the second stabilized orientations of the liquid crystal to the third and the fourth stabilized orientations respectively, the matrix electrode means composed of the transparent electrodes 102a, 102b, the means for impressing a scanning selecting signal and an information signal to the matrix electrode means, and the means for impressing the electric field having the first and the second steps, and the polarizers 107, 108 for detecting the optical difference of the ray passed the liquid crystal having the third and the fourth stabilized orientations. By constituting the title element as mentioned above, the display characteristics of a high constract in a domain of a thick thickness of the cell are obtained.
