PURPOSE:To synchronize surely the phase of a low band luminance signal with that of a high band luminance signal by multiplexing and recording a pilot signal indicating phase relations between a horizontal synchronizing signal and a clock subcarrier and using this pilot signal as a synchronizing signal. CONSTITUTION:A video signal is separated into a low band component and a high band component, and the low band component has the frequency modulated and is converted to a high band signal, and the high band component has the frequency converted into a low band signal. These signals are the pilot signal indicating phase relations between the horizontal synchronizing signal and the color subcarrier which are included in the video signal are multiplexed and recorded. In the reproducing side, the low band component of the video signal is demodulated by a frequency demodulator 33, and the high band component converted to the low band signal is inputted to a multiplier 36. The multiplier 36 uses the output signal of a PLL circuit 45 synchronized with the reproduced pilot signal to convert the low band converted signal to the original high band signal. An adding circuit 38 adds the low band component and the high band component to restore the original video signal.
