PURPOSE:To widen the dynamic range by converting a level signal from photosensitive picture elements having different photodetction areas based on the area of the photosensitive picture element to make the sensitivity equal and adding a level difference signal to the converted signal. CONSTITUTION:When incident light where an output voltage of photodiodes 1a-9a is saturated and an output voltage of photodiodes 11b-19f is not saturated is made incident on the photodetection part of an area image sensor 21, the output signals of the photodiodes 1a-9a and 11b-9f are amplified by factors of Ga, Gb by amplifiers 23, 25 and the output of the amplifiers 23, 25 is added by an adder circuit 31. Then a voltage over the saturated output voltage of the amplifier 23 is added to the output voltage of the amplifier 23 as an output signal of a difference circuit 19 among the output signals of the photodiodes 1a-9g to obtain a normal picture signal.
