PURPOSE:To obtain a thermoplastic resin excellent in heat distortion resistance and impact resistance, by polymerizing a monomer mixture comprising acrylonitrile and styrene in the presence of a diene rubber and completing the polymerization by adding specified monomers successively to the reaction mixture. CONSTITUTION:In polymerizing 95-70pts.wt. monomer in the presence of 5-30pts.wt. diene rubber so that the total amount may be 100pts.wt., 2-40pts. wt. monomer mixture (A) comprising acrylonitrile and styrene at an acrylonitrile/styrene weight ratio of 10/90-40/60 is first polymerized. To this reaction mixture, 10-80pts.wt. monomer (B) containing 80-100wt% alpha-methylstyrene is added and polymerized. To this reaction mixture, 18-83pts.wt. monomer mixture (C) containing 1-20pts.wt. maleimide and/or its N-aryl-substituted derivative and containing acrylonitrile in an amount to provide an alpha-methyl-styrene/ acrylonitrile weight ratio, inclusive of the contribution from monomer B, of 90/10-65/35 is added and polymerized.
