PURPOSE:To provide the titled compsn. which has excellent hiding power and storage stability and is suitable for use in the production of paint which gives a dense coating film having excellent dryness, hardness, etc., consisting of a maleinized alkyd resin emulsion and an opaque polymer particle. CONSTITUTION:A (semi)drying oil (fatty acid), a polybasic acid, a monobasic acid and a polyhydric alcohol are subjected to a dehydration-condensation reaction at 150-250 deg.C in an inert gas atmosphere for 3-20hr. The resulting alkyd resin is reacted with maleic anhydride to obtain a maleinized alkyd resin having an acid value of 7-70, an oil length of 15-80 and a viscosity of F-Z5 (in 60wt% butyl cellosolve diluent soln. with a Gardner bubble viscometer). The resin is neutralized with 0.1-2.0 equivalents (based on the quantity of the COOH group of the resin) of a neutralizing agent such as diethylamine. If desired, an org. solvent is used to obtain a maleinized alkyd resin emulsion contg. 10-65wt% solid. 10-150pts.wt. opaque polymer particle having an average particle size of 0.1-2.5mu is blended with 100pts.wt. (on a solid basis) emulsion.
