PURPOSE:To prevent the breaking of an ion exchange membrane by a sudden change in the amounts of gaseous Cl and H2 generated and to maintain the purity of NaOH when an aqueous NaCl soln. is electrolyzed by an ion exchange membrane process, by changing the quantity of electric current supplied to an electrolytic cell at a specified rate or below. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous NaCl soln. is fed to the anode chamber of an electrolytic cell provided with an ion exchange membrane, an aqueous NaOh soln. is circulated through the cathode chamber, and about 60 kA electric current is supplied to electrolyze the NaCl soln. When the quantity of the electric current supplied is changed during the electrolytic operation, it is changed at <=5 kA/min rate so that the pressures of gaseous Cl and H2 generated by the electrolysis in the anode and cathode chambers, respectively are slightly changed. As a result, the damage of the ion exchange membrane by an increased change in the pressures is prevented, and since the NaCl soln. as an anolyte does not enter the NaOH soln. as a catholyte through the membrane, the purity of NaOH is not lowered.
