PURPOSE:To make the titled filter apparatus advantageous from the aspects of an installation area, installation construction and cost, by providing a preparatory filter tank, of which the bottom part is brought into communication with the area under the receiving plate of a main filter tank, above the filter material bed in the main filter tank. CONSTITUTION:A preparatory filter tank 7 is provided above the filter material bed 4 in a main filter tank 1 so as to be mounted to the inner surface of one side wall 1d of said tank 1 and a filtering speed adjusting tank 8 is provided to the other side wall 1e of the tank 1. A water guide pipe 12 is suspended from the bottom wall 7a of the preparatory filter tank 7 so as to pierce a receiving plate 2 and a large number of fine holes 12a are provided to the side surface of the lower end part of said pipe 12 by drilling. Water to be filtered flowed in the preparatory filter tank 7 from an inflow pipe passes a filter material 11 to be flowed down through the water guide pipe 12 and issued from the fine holes 12a of the lower end part thereof and subsequent ly upwardly passes through the receiving plate 2 and the filter material bed 4 to be accumulated above the filter material bed 4 and guided to the filtering speed adjusting tank 8 by a water gathering pipe 14 and flowed out of an outflow pipe 16 through a notch plate 13.
