PREPARATION PROCESS OF MANDELIC ACID DERIVATIVES

Mandelic acid derivs. of formula (I) in which R is a 1-5C aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic gp., R1 and R2 are 1,5C aliphatic gps., are made by (a) treating mandelic acid esters with benzyl chloride in presence of NaI or KI in acetone dioxane or DMF; (b) reacting the prod. with dil. NaOH or KOH soln.; (c) treating the prod. with zinc and HCl; (d) reacting with SOCl2 and 7-methyl or 7-ethyl 7-azobicyclo (2,2,1) heptan-2-ol, in presence of tri-ethylamine or pyridine; and (e) hydrogenating the prod. in presence of Pd/C.
