PURPOSE:To read an image having a good quality by specifying a sampling interval and the diameter of a main beam in an image reader for obtaining an image signal by converting the rays of light from a recording medium, to an electric signal, and sampling it. CONSTITUTION:A laser beam emitted from a laser tube passes through a beam expander, a rotary polyhedral mirror, an ftheta lens, and a cylindrical lens, and forms an image on an X-ray film in which a medical image is recorded, being an image information recording medium. The optical beam transmits through the X-ray film, is sent to a photoelectric converter by an optical fiber tube aggregate and converted to an electric signal, and used as a digital image signal through a current-voltage converter, an amplifier, a sample holding circuit S/H, and an A/D converter. When the beam diameter and the sampling interval are denoted as B and L, respectively, this reader is constituted so as to satisfy 20mu<=L<=400mum, and 28mum<=B<=400mum.
