In the device for applying a protective layer to the welding or soldering seam of can blanks, two driven rollers (23, 23') which are arranged in series in a coating agent container (24) apply a coating agent to the weld. In this process, one roller (23) covers the actual seam and the other roller (23') covers the area to the sides of the weld. The two effective areas of the roller overlap at the critical points at the sides of the weld. At the side of the rollers (23, 23'), dividing walls (46, 47) are present which extend over approximately the entire length of the coating agent container (24). As a result, the coating agent container is divided into three zones. In the central zone of the rollers (23, 23'), the coating agent is fed counter to the direction of transport and, after deflection at an end side of the container (24) flows back into one of the lateral zones.
