The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 1-chloroalkyl or 1-chloroaralkyl carbamates of formula: <IMAGE> According to this process, a carbamyl chloride of formula: <IMAGE> is reacted with an aldehyde of formula R<1>CHO in the presence of a catalyst chosen from the transition metal halides at a temperature from 20 DEG to 120 DEG C. This process makes it possible to avoid the use of an acid acceptor or the production of by-products.
