The invention relates to road safety. The device forming the subject of the invention is of the type comprising, placed on supports 1, 2, a vertical guide 3 on which are mounted an optical system 4 which can move vertically along the said guide and which is fitted with a supporting base 7, on which base an objective 8 and a screen 9 are arranged in tandem, and an orientation system 5 capable of angular movements, and is characterised in that the guide 3 is made in the form of a frame 6 and that the objective 8 is mounted in this frame and is hinged, as is the screen 9, to the supporting base 7. The invention can be used for checking vehicle headlights regarding their conformity to traffic-safety requirements, carried out by traffic police, by businesses servicing transportation means or by owners of transportation means. <IMAGE>
