The device for illuminating indoor rooms with natural daylight has a ceiling (22), which is suspended below a floor (10) and is designed to be transparent. Sunlight and daylight can enter through a protective glazing (40) into the space between the floor (10) and the ceiling (22) suspended therebelow. The underside of the floor (10) and the surfaces of the side walls between the floor (10) and the ceiling (22) suspended therebelow are constructed to be diffusely totally reflecting or mirrored, so that the daylight is delivered into the space below the suspended ceiling (22). In order to guide daylight in a pinpointed fashion into the interior of the building, it is possible to arrange mirrored surface strips (50, 52 or 54 and 56) on the underside of the floor (10) and on the top side of the suspended ceiling (22). These mirrored strips conduct the light backwards into the interior of the building. The surface strips (54 and 56) can in this case have a smaller width than the surface strips (50 and 52), with the result that in addition to the reflected portion of the daylight an adequate portion can pass downwards through the transparent ceiling (22). <IMAGE>
