In slow-motion playback, a control unit (20) controls the feed rate of a magnetic tape (1) and the rotational speed of a rotating drum in such a way that they are 1/nth of that of normal recording. Reproduced signals received from a video head (2) are time-base compressed by an A/D converter (7), a first image memory (8), a memory control circuit (9), a second image memory (10), a D/A converter (11) and a switch (12), so that they are output repeatedly for predetermined intervals. <IMAGE>
