A device is described for producing short electron pulses, in the case of which the electrons are emitted by cold field emission. The device according to the invention is distinguished by the fact that, in order to produce short electron pulses having high directionality, the electrical field is dimensioned to be continuously variable in time and in such a manner that cold field emission takes place from the electron source, which is constructed as a fine metal tip, only in the region of the field strength maximum. The device according to the invention can furthermore be developed such that X-ray pulses or ion pulses of short duration can also be produced.
