PURPOSE:To read and output an original when the original is placed on any optional position of an original platen by controlling the output timing of an outputting device in accordance with the position of a picture area on the original. CONSTITUTION:When an original 6 is scanned, a light source 2 and mirrors 12-16 are moved in a scanning direction. A character pattern information area on the original is detected as the narrowest rectangular area surrounding character pattern information as shown by broken lines in the figure. This area is surround with a broken line (a) (original end 1), a broken line (b) (original end 2), a broken line (a) (position of the front end of the original), and a broken line (d) (position of the rear end of the original). Information of the original is detected with a CCD 20 by moving the scan position successively in the longitudinal direction of the original. The flow of original detection is executed once for every scanning at every scan position.
