Process for preparing water glass solutions of commercial composition and density by reacting ground quartz sand with aqueous sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide at elevated pressure and elevated temperatures in an autoclave according to Patent Application P 3500649.8, in which the ground quartz sand was prepared by grinding quartz sand in ball mills in the presence of 50 % aqueous sodium hydroxide and, if required, added water.
