PURPOSE:To produce a cylindrical polyolefin by a simple method, by polymerizing an olefin by using a catalyst obtained by contacting calcium carbonate with a magnesium compound in an ether and contacting the product of contact further with a specified compound. CONSTITUTION:An olefin is polymerized by using a catalyst comprising a catalyst component obtained by contacting calcium carbonate (a) with a magnesium compound (b) in an organic compound (c) of the formula: R<1>OR<2> (wherein R<1> and R<2> are each alkyl or aryl) and contacting the product of contact further with an aromatic dicarboxylic acid diester (d) and a titanium dihalide (e). It is necessary that the magnesium compound used is a compound obtained by reacting metallic magnesium with a halohydrocarbon. In the preparation of this magnesium compound, it is preferable that metallic magnesium is reacted with a halohydrocarbon at a temperature of 0 deg.C- the b.p. of the halohydrocarbon in the presence of, optionally, iodone or its compound until the reaction is brought to completion.
