PURPOSE:To obtain a frame for a bicycle having sober and soft surface luster and high surface hardness at a low cost by successively forming plated layers of semi-bright nickel, bright nickel, searchlight nickel and chromium. CONSTITUTION:Four plated layers of semi-bright nickel, bright nickel, searchlight nickel and chromium are successively formed on the surface of a steel pipe for a frame for a bicycle. The thickness of the layers are about 10mum, about 8mum, about 8mum and about 0.2mum, respectively. Thus, a frame for a bicycle about 450 surface hardness Hv and subdued opal where and soft surface luster is obtd. The frame is hardly scratched because of the high surface hardness even when a bicycle having the frame falls down.
