PURPOSE:To obtain the titled microbeads having a high specific surface area, by adding and mixing an aromatic oil with a pitch material containing mesophase microspheres in a matrix pitch obtained by heat-treating a pitch, and directly heat-treating the resultant mixture. CONSTITUTION:A pitch, e.g. coal based tar or pitch or petroleum based heavy oil or pitch, is heat-treated particularly at 350-500 deg.C in n N2 gas stream to give a pitch material containing normally 1-25wt% mesophase microspheres in the matrix pitch. 0.1-10pts.wt., particularly 1-2pts.wt., based on 1pts.wt. pitch material, aromatic oil is added and mixed therewith, and the resultant mixture is heat-treated at 100-400 deg.C without separating the matrix pitch and mesophase microspheres. The resultant mesocarbon microbeads are then separated by the ordinary method, e.g. filtration while hot of the heat-treated material, and subjected to operation, e.g. washing with a solvent, e.g. quinoline, to give the aimed porous mesocarbon microbeads having a specific surface area as high as >=10m<2>/g. |
