PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful in a plastic field in a short time in high yield industrially advantageously, by adding a specific aromatic sulfonic acid to a reaction system and reacting dehydrating phenol with a sulfonating agent, etc. CONSTITUTION:Phenol is reacted with a sulfonating agent (e.g., conc. sulfuric acid, sulfuric anhydride, etc.) or phenolsulfonic acid to give dehydroxydiphenolsulfone. In the operation, an aromatic sulfonic acid shown by the formula (X is halogen; n is 0, 1, or 2; m is 1 or 2) is added to the reaction system to carry out the reaction. Benzenesulfonic acid, chlorobenzene-4- sulfonic acid, chlorobenzene-2-sulfonic acid, etc. may be cited as the compound shown by the formula. The existence of the compound shown by the formula promotes the reaction and the reaction can be carried out at relatively low temperature (usually 120-220 deg.C, preferably 140-200 deg.C) so this method can advantageously suppress by-products. |
