A two step process for the production of high octane products for motor gasoline from C3 to C6 alkenes comprises (a) reacting the C3 to C6 alkenes with water in a molar ratio of alkene to water of at least 3:1 over an acid hydration catalyst to form oligomers of the alkenes, ethers and optionally alcohols and (b) reacting C3 to C6 alkenes remaining from step (a) with isobutane in a second step to form alkylate. The feed to the process can be a C3/C4 stream from a cat. cracker or steam cracker. In one embodiment the feed contains isobutane and the process of step (a) is controlled so as to give a molar ratio of isobutane to alkenes in the product from step (a) suitable as a feed for the akylation without the necessity of adding isobutane.
|
